Migraines are a neurological disorder that causes such intense discomfort that it can be debilitating for the one suffering. Recently, the Journal of the American Headache Society reported that one of the side effects of frequent migraine episodes is progressive brain damage.
In the study, the brains of 28 patients who had migraines were examined by using a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging machine, called an MRI. From the results they discovered that the individuals who suffered from 3 or more migraines per month showed more abnormalities than the participants who experienced less than 3 migraines per month. When they examined the brains of those who had migraines for longer than 15 years compared to individuals who had only recently developed migraines, they found more abnormalities in those who had had migraines for more than 15 years.
These research results do not sound promising; however, there is hope out there. Other research done that uses an upright MRI found that when a misalignment occurs in the upper neck vertebrae, a change in cerebrospinal fluid flow occurs. This vital fluid for optimal brain function acts like a lubricant to the brain and spinal cord. A misalignment in the upper cervical spine can cause this fluid to build-up and create intracranial pressure. What is great about this problem is that it can be easily corrected by simply realigning the uppermost bones of the neck.
Upper cervical chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to do this. Upper cervical chiropractors are specifically trained to identify and adjust these vertebrae of the spine. They use a gentle technique that helps the bones to return to their correct position. As soon as this happens, cerebrospinal fluid flow is able to be regulated once again and the healing properties of the body take over healing any damage sustained from the misalignment. The body can now strengthen the tissues and muscles that need to maintain a normal, healthy spinal position for a pain-free daily life. The results of many studies have reported a decrease in migraine attacks or even an end to migraines for many patients who received upper cervical chiropractic care.
To be clear, migraines that are caused from a misalignment of the neck will keep coming back no matter the amount of medication used because these drugs only deal with the symptoms.
