Headaches can be severe and debilitating, but they can also be relatively minor. There are many types of headaches, but primary headaches have their cause. There are three major categories of primary headaches, all of which we'll discuss in this article so that you can better understand your situation. We'll also share about upper cervical care in Vancouver to help you know a potentially practical approach to managing your headaches.

Primary Headaches: Types, Causes, Symptoms

As previously mentioned, there are three major categories of primary headaches. This includes cluster headaches, tension-type headaches, and migraines. Notably, primary headaches account for the majority of the reported cases of headaches. It's also among the top reasons why people seek upper cervical care in Vancouver.

Primary headaches can be episodic or chronic. An episodic headache is a new occurrence that lasts less than 15 days and then goes away for at least one month. In contrast, chronic headache lasts for more than three months and does not go away without intervention.

Cluster headache

This type is a rare, episodic headache that affects about 1 in a thousand people. It is the most painful type of headache, with pain described as piercing or burning. The pain can often be felt on one side of the face or head and may be located behind one eye or in the temple area. The headaches last for 15 to 180 minutes and can occur multiple times per day during a cluster period that lasts weeks or months.

Tension-type Headache

TTH (for short) is the most common type of primary headache. They can be either episodic or chronic, but they are not painful enough to cause you to lose consciousness. TTH is often caused by stress, anxiety, depression, or other emotional triggers. Some people also get tension headaches from sleeping in an uncomfortable position or poor posture.

Migraine with aura

A migraine with aura is the most common type of migraine, wherein it comes with visual disturbances called "auras" before the actual head pain starts. These auras include flashing lights in your eyes, blind spots or partial vision loss, zigzag lines, or even temporary blindness.

Migraine without aura

A migraine without aura causes moderate to severe pain on one side of the head. It's more common in women than men but not associated with increased stroke or heart attack risk. Migraine without aura can be treated with medications, though lifestyle adjustments such as exercise and dietary changes are also helpful for reducing symptoms.
