What Causes the Spinning Sensation of Vertigo?

what-causes-the-spinning-sensation-of-vertigo

As vertigo chiropractors based in Vancouver, WA, we’ve delved deep into the condition, its symptoms, and possible relief options for it.

What exactly is vertigo, and why does it bring an uncontrollable spinning sensation to those affected? This article should answer these questions and shed more light on this often misconstrued condition.

What Is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a condition related to the central nervous system, consisting of the brain, spinal cord, and brainstem. This system, along with information from the eyes, inner ear (which is part of the vestibular system), spine, and pressure receptors of the joints and muscles, helps maintain our balance and equilibrium.

Once a malfunction occurs within these complex systems, vertigo can occur. For example if the brain receives mismatched signals from the eyes, inner ear, and pressure receptors vertigo might happen.

One common occurance is when someone experiences motion sickness from reading a book while riding in a car. Motion sickness often involves nausea and not the vertigo feeling that the surroundings are spinning, but the concept is the same. The eyes were focused on the book, which was not moving. But the inner ear was picking up the changes in direction and speed from the movement of the car. This mismatch in signals results in motion sickness and can also result in vertigo.

Apart from the spinning sensation, vertigo’s symptoms include weakness, headaches, nausea and vomiting, sweating, speech problems, and visual disturbances. Some people also experience sensitivity to light.

The Natural Relief Option for Vertigo

Misalignment on the top two bones of the neck puts unnecessary pressure on the brainstem. As a result, it can send improper signals to the brain, which also causes vertigo.

Misalignments of the top two vertebrae, the C1 and C2, can receive an adjustment from an upper cervical chiropractor. We’ve been in business as vertigo chiropractors based in Vancouver, WA for a while now. And through our years of experience, we’ve seen great results in our patients.
