Vertigo is a common problem in the United States and becomes even more common as a person ages. For those over the age of 40, a vertigo episode will occur for 40% of the population. Many suffer from chronic bouts and may even experience a drop attack—a vertigo attack that comes on so suddenly and severely that the person falls as a result.
It is interesting to note that many people do not experience their first bout with vertigo until after a whiplash injury such as one that may be sustained in a car accident. This fact came to the fore in a study that involved 139 patients suffering from Meniere’s disease.
In this particular study, 139 patients who were suffering from severe vertigo as a result of Meniere’s disease underwent upper cervical chiropractic care. In is important to note, however, that none of the patients began exhibiting symptoms until after a whiplash-type injury. Most of the patients had been in car accidents.
The study revealed that 136 of the 139 patients had definitive benefits in regards to vertigo after upper cervical adjustments. Average vertigo intensity for the patients was reduced from 8.5 (on a scale of 1 to 10) to just 1.4 after two years of care.
If you suffer from vertigo, especially if you have ever experienced a whiplash type injury such as from a car accident, you should get your upper neck examined for a subluxation. If the bones are not in alignment at this critical juncture, it can affect the way the brain processes signals in regards to its position in space. As a result, a person may feel like he or she is spinning.
In some instances, such as in one case study involving a 37-year-old woman who started experiencing vertigo after falling down the stairs, the first adjustment provides complete relief from vertigo.
